Mission 002
Hidden in Plain Sight
Wires, branches & false confidence — why obstacle sensing can't see everything.
Step 1 · Mission Briefing
A property shoot with mature trees and overhead lines
Help a beginner pilot plan a safe aerial photo mission.
A beginner Part 107 pilot has been hired to capture aerial images of a residential property. The lot has mature trees with thin outer branches and overhead utility lines running between poles. The aircraft has obstacle sensing enabled.
Your job is to help plan a safe mission. You will scan the scene for hazards, decide how much to rely on the aircraft's sensors, and respond when something hidden appears in the planned path.
What this lesson teaches
- Thin wires, cables, and small branches are surprisingly hard to see.
- Obstacle sensing is limited and cannot be relied on to detect every object.
- Preflight planning and visual line of sight stay your primary tools.
